Cholesterol is generally found in the foods that we eat. And there are two forms of cholesterol that most of us are aware of, the good and bad cholesterol. Basically, the body needs cholesterol in order to function well and this cholesterol is called the good cholesterol which the body produces on its own through the organ liver. However, we get bad cholesterol through the different foods that we eat that mainly comes from animal like the fat and protein in them. Dairy products that mostly come from cow’s milk like butter, cheese and egg have high amounts of cholesterol in them which when consumed in high amounts could be harmful to the body. These are called the bad cholesterol.

Good cholesterol is found in the form of high density lipoproteins or HDL while bad cholesterol on the other hand is found in the form of low density lipoproteins or LDL. The production of HDL by the liver is important to boost the health and performance of heart whereas LDL are harmful to one’s health by clogging up the arterial as well as venial wall thus the risks of cardiovascular diseases.

Some studies conclude that alcohol could offer optimal results especially for cardiovascular purposes, though the only recommended amount is 4 ounces and less. A jigger of alcohol helps the HDL levels increase which results to preventing LDL cholesterol build up.

Alcohol contains a helpful anti-coagulating agent that acts to prevent the blood from clotting and building in the arterial walls and venial walls. However, there are also adverse side effects of alcohol such effects includes obesity, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer and addiction to it. With such, the World Health Organization does not recommend drinking alcohol as a means to alleviate cholesterol levels especially if one is not drinking such.

Drinking alcohol excessively brings more harm to the body than good. Excessive would mean drinking more than 3 glasses a day. When one drinks more than 3 glasses, they put their body at risk of gaining fat which cause the body to increase triglycerides, a third form of cholesterol. Alcohol consumption affects enzyme production responsible for processing triglycerides which in turn makes the liver produce more of it.

Once a person consumes alcohol, the body reacts and eliminates it quickly and so the liver works to cleanse away the alcohol leaving out the cholesterol that result to increased LDL levels. It can harm the brain, heart and liver.
